MonetAfter School Art Classes

We’re having fun this month with our kids classes at schools and here in Midtown at Paint Party Studios. Last week in our after school classes we studied Claude Monet and painted our own version of his “Water Lilies and Japanese Bridge”. We learned that the Japanese garden he painted was on his own estate in France. We also learned about impressionism which translated into kids class means a sortof fuzzy painting. To get a similar effect on our own paintings, we used packing peanuts as our paintbrush. Before we painted, we taped out a bridge and then when the painting was dry and we removed the tape, we had clean white lines for our bridge where the paint didn’t touch the paper. This picture is before we pulled the tape.

Wednesday Blue DogEllas Blue Dog 3This week we welcomed some new students to our Wednesday after school Mixed Media Art Class and had fun learning about Louisiana artist George Rodrigue, famous for his Blue Dog paintings. We looked at some of his original Blue Dog paintings to see how Mr. Rodrigue’s Blue Dog stayed the same but the backgrounds changed. Then step-by-step we drew our own Blue Dogs and added our own fun backgrounds. Things got a little zany when Blue Dog became a mermaid and a disco dancer for some of our creative students! We love it when the kids do their own thing and put their imagination to work to make their drawings and paintings unique!

Ella's Blue Dog

Two of our young artists had recently visited New Orleans with their family where they had seen a Blue Dog painting on the Sheraton on Canal Street so they had a first-hand idea of what a real Blue Dog painting looked like and could tell the class about it.

Monday's Blue Dogs

Our Monday students also had a fun time customizing their Blue Dog drawings (picture right). As an instructor there’s no better reward than seeing students gain confidence in their ability to do what they previously felt they couldn’t do.

The Monday group is making such great progress, I’m especially proud of the young artist that drew the Blue Dog in the top right corner. He has come such a long way since August with his new confidence in art translating into more confidence in other areas of school and among his peers. He worked very hard on his Blue Dog and was the last one to finish and his attention to detail and hard work really shows in the final product.

We still have a few seats available in our Wednesday afternoon Mixed Media Art Class that meets from 3:30-4:30 at our studio at 15 Upham Street (Upham and Old Shell Rd.). Kids ages 6-10 learn about famous artists and then paint or draw our own versions of great paintings. Call 251-343-2423 to register.

School Art Lesson Paint Parties

Van Gogh Sunflowers

Van Gogh Sunflowers

Today we had a blast at a paint party with two combined classes of third grade. We learned about Vincent Van Gogh’s Sunflowers Third Version. We painted our own version of a close up of one of the top right sunflowers from the original painting.

The students are studying plants and so we were looking for some art that tied into the curriculum and we’re excited to find something where we could combine art with science. The students had a great time painting with their friends and even though we were all painting the same thing, each painting turned out unique as each child put their own creative twist on it. In fact, one girl raised her hand at the start and asked if they could be creative with their painting and we said ABSOLUTELY we LOVE that!

If you would like Paint Party Studios to visit your school, just give us a call at 251-343-2423. We are happy to work with you to tie the painting into your current curriculum or we can go with something just for fun.

We had 42 young painters today – these are just a few of the finished paintings (too many to fit in one photo), but all the kids did a fantastic job – they even outlined it themselves. Such talented artists!

Mardi Gras Door WreathWe had a fantastic December with lots of fun, new Christmas paintings but now it’s January and time to paint some Mardi Gras paintings. We’ve got some brand new Mardi Gras paintings that we’ll be adding to our gallery to go with our long-time Mardi Gras favorites.

Mardi Gras DecorationsBook your paint party to add to your Mardi Gras decorations – follow our lead with one of our gallery images or change it up to make it your own unique painting.

You can choose from our Mardi Gras paintings year-round, but if you want to get one done before Mardi Gras, call us soon to book your paint party because Mardi Gras is early this year (February 9th).

During the month of January we’ll have our Two-for-Tuesdays with kids (ages 6+) welcome between 3pm-5:30pm (to be finished by 7:30pm) and adults welcome anytime from 3pm-8pm (to finish by 11:00pm or so). We strongly recommend reservations as we’ve been having some busy Tuesday nights so call ahead 251-343-2423 to save a seat.

Mardi Gras Whimsical WordsWe also keep regular hours on Friday night for Adults only BYOB Paint and Sip from 5:30pm-11pm. This is a good night for small groups or couples looking for a fun and creative date night. It’s usually a little more chill than our Tuesday night party and a good night to come in if you don’t have a group to paint with. We do take walk-ins if seats are available – but we strongly recommend you call ahead for reservations at 251-343-2423. You can pick what you want to paint when you arrive and pay once you’ve decided ($30 for 16×20″ or $25 for 11×14″ canvas) – we accept cash or all major credit cards.
Purple Green Gold Fleur de LisSaturday afternoons from 3pm-6pm are still $20 per canvas family-friendly afternoon paint party. Kids (ages 6+) and adults welcome during those hours – just call for reservations. Kids should arrive between 3-4pm so they can be finished painting by 6pm as after that it’s Adults Only BYOB.

Mardi Gras MaskAdults looking for a good deal for a Saturday night Date Night or Girls Night Out should arrive around 5:45pm to get the $20 price and be able to stay for Adults Only BYOB. After 6pm the prices go back to the standard $30 for 16×20″ and $25 for 11×14″. Saturday hours after 6pm are by advance reservation only so call if you’ll be arriving after 6pm.

Bourbon StreetTuesdays afternoons-evenings, Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons are the only times we keep regular “retail” hours – all other times are by appointment with advance group reservations.
Mardi Gras Rustic Fleur de LisDuring the week we host bridal showers, baby showers, girls night out, office parties, business team building events, employee appreciation events, school field trips, after-school art classes, art lessons at schools and many, many more paint party events both in our studio and off-site. Please call us at 251-343-2423 to book your event or to make individual reservations. While we do welcome walk-ins when we are open and have seats available, we do not guarantee any “retail” hours without a reservation so it’s always a good idea to call first before heading to the studio if you don’t already have a reservation.

As we celebrate the new year and ring in 2016, we’ve had a fun week this week with some fantastic custom paintings by our talented customers. We were using pallet knives, splatter paint, custom fonts and starting with a black canvas background, a tissue paper textured background and of course we added some glitter to some of the paintings to make them pop. We also took some images we’ve used before but changed them up to make them unique like the couples version of the Twisted Tree on two canvases and cropping our popular “Inspire” painting and turning it vertical. We love when the creativity is flowing and when customers are eager to try something new.

Pallet ChurchBallet Palet KnifeBallet pallet knife in process This rustic church and abstract ballerina were both painted primarily with pallet knives instead of brushes to get the heavy textured effect. In both cases the customers said they had no experience with pallet knife painting but their paintings look like they’re already pros at it. You can see the one image where we caught the artist in process with her pallet knife to illustrate how she got the texture on the dress. She also used the knife on the background to blend the browns and gold to get the abstract effect. She used a paintbrush for the arms, legs and head.

With the church, we used a heavier white to blend throughout to give some added texture to the sky and church walls.

IloveVB2IloveVBWe had a volleyball player painting with us on Tuesday night so we found this image that looked like fun. It was so much fun that on Wednesday when another volleyball player saw the picture she decided she’d paint it as well – but changed up the colors to make it her own.

For this painting, the artists painted the background, the letters and the volleyball, then they blended their colors on the heart. When that was finished and dry, we outlined everything and then got out the splatter brushes. (Actually on Tuesday we did it backwards and outlined after the splatter – we corrected that on Wednesday :). You can see from the picture on the left a closeup of our tools and in the picture on the right you see the splatter painting in-process as we flick some color on the painting.

Both of them turned out great and we anticipate this being a popular painting for our artists who love volleyball.

ILoveVB Finished

Lee Name SignWe also helped with a fun custom font painting this week. The idea was to paint a name canvas to hang on a wall with lots of family photos. Our customer came up with the font and the overall vision and we gave her instructions on how to get there. We started with a black canvas and painted forward with layers in a rustic effect. We dried it and sketched the font on for her (creating our own lower case letters as her sample only had upper case – so together we invented a little of our own font). She painted the letters and then added some extra swishes and dots to give it the whimsical effect. It turned out looking great.

Tissue Abstract

Another customer had formed an idea for an abstract painting she wanted to do and then she saw some of our experimental canvases with tissue paper texture on them. She asked if she could give it a try and with a little instruction and some patience while the tissue paper dried, she had a 16×20″ canvas with texture ready to paint. She got creative with some white, grey, black and lime green and then followed with some silver paint to make it pop. Unfortunately the picture doesn’t capture the texture and colors as much as I’d like – the photo just doesn’t do it justice but everyone at the studio that night was admiring it and thought she was pretty daring for taking on an experimental project without knowing exactly how it might turn out. That’s what many artists do all the time as they try new techniques so we love it when customers are willing to take risks and let their inner artist flow.

Ballerina

Of course hardly an evening goes by without a little bit of glitter coming out. Miss April from the The Dance Academy of Mobile
stopped by with some of her instructors (including the artist with the pallet knife ballet painting we already mentioned).ballerina closeup

Miss April’s painting needed something to make it pop so we got out the glitter paint and some bling and gave her tiara some jewels and her costume some sparkle. The glitter doesn’t always sOlaf Pink how up well in photos – but if you’ve ever been in the studio and seen a painting with a little shimmer, you know it is a fun way to give your painting that extra something.

Olaf even got a little sparkle on Wednesday afternoon – we love how this little painter changed up the background colors to match her room and at the end we really felt it needed some sparkle to finish it.

She had a great time adding the pink sparkle paint over her background. Her sister painted Flounder so we added blue sparkle to her ocean background.

Inspire Vertical

Olaf wasn’t the only painting that got a make-over this week – we had some other popular paintings that we changed up – including cropping the “Inspire” painting and turning it vertical and changing up the dress color to a cool mint green. She then used the copper metalic paint to give the hair that shimmer that you can see a little in the image.

We also took the “Twisted Tree” and made it into a couples painting on two canvases (below). Many of our gallery images can be turned into a couples painting for a fun date night – just ask and we’ll help you pick one to paint with your special someone.

Couple Paintingt
What a great way to wrap up a busy December – lots of creativity and beautiful paintings. If you’re feeling inspired by these ideas or have your own idea, call us at 251-343-2423 for reservations to come paint your own unique masterpiece.

ReindeerIt’s that time that we start seeing a lot of Christmas paintings as well as customers coming in to paint paintings as gifts. To get into the holiday spirit we’ve compiled a new Christmas painting idea book in the studio with over 50 new Christmas painting ideas for you to choose from.

Christmas paintings make great gifts for loved ones (especially Christmas paintings done by children for their grandparents or other relatives). We recently had a boy in with his grandmother to paint Olaf and an Alabama football (we won’t tell you who so we don’t give away the Christmas surprise!).

Whether it’s for a gift or to decorate your own house for the holidays, painting is a great way to relax during the stressful holiday season. We just had a group of teachers come in to paint with us (many painting Christmas paintings), but mostly they just needed a chance to relax with colleagues. If you’re looking for a fun Christmas party idea with your workmates or a girls night out to de-stress in this rush-rush-rush season, call us to schedule your paint party. You bring the wine and food, we provide the art therapy.

Abstract 18x24 CrossIf you’ve already mastered the 11×14″ and 16×20″ canvas and are looking for something bigger, we do have 18×24″ canvases available with advance reservations. Call and reserve yours. The cost for one of painting one of our gallery images is just $50 for the 18×24″ canvas. When you choose your image, we can give you an estimate of how many hours to plan for (sometimes 18×24″ canvases take two or more visits). If you have a custom image, please email it to us and we can give you an estimate of how much time it will likely take and what the cost will be (cost varies with custom images sketched on the oversize canvas).

This abstract cross is an example of an 18×24″ painting that was painted in our studio by a customer. She took about 4.5 hours to complete that one so she finished it in one long session. Others that have more detail generally take two or more visits to the studio to complete. We’re happy to discuss options with you for the larger canvases.

Snowman La LunaLooking for a Christmas wood door hanger? We have a limited stock of Christmas wood door hangers including a snowman, a reindeer, a stocking, candy canes, an ornament and the letters J-O-Y. If you want to do a wood door hanger, we recommend you call to reserve those as we just have a few on hand so if you want to hold one, you will need to prepay for that. They’re $35 each so hurry before they’re all gone.Stocking

We’ve gotten a few calls about pet portraits this time of year to give as Christmas gifts. The pet portraits in our gallery are the same prices as our other paintings ($30 for 16×20″ or $25 for 11×14″) so take a look and see if our gallery pets look like your pet and if so, come on in and paint one with us. If you want a custom pet portrait based on your own photograph, one of our artists would be happy to paint it for you to give as a gift, please contact us. Pet portraits start at $75.

Not sure what they want but know they like to paint? Give them a gift certificate. Give us a call and we’ll be happy to help you with Christmas gift certificates for any amount and as many as you need.

So whether it’s to de-stress during the frantic Christmas season or to make art as gifts or a little of both, give us a call at 251-343-2423 to let Paint Party Studios help you make this a Merry Christmas for you and your family. We have extended hours including our Two-for-Tuesdays through December and we’re available 7 days a week by appointment.
